USCEC’s Focus Campaign

It's Time for a National Coal Moratorium!

The burning of coal is far and away the most polluting way to generate energy. More greenhouse gas pollution comes from coal burning than any other energy source. Despite that, and despite the wide range of viable, clean energy alternatives, coal companies, supported by federal legislation passed in 2005, are planning to build 150 or more new coal-fired power plants around the country. We must organize and take action now to change these plans! It's time for a national coal moratorium!

USCEC and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) are initiating a campaign for a coal moratorium. CCAN is initiating a coal moratorium campaign in Virginia. USCEC will be working for a coal moratorium with groups around the country that are fighting plans for new coal plants.

We will be building towards a major action this fall in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. D.C. gets a great deal of energy from four aging, coal-fired plants that ring the outskirts of the city. Together they emit in one day as many carbon emissions as 20,000 Hummers circling the capital beltway for a day. By demonstrating, including nonviolent civil disobedience, at the same time at these four plants, we can send a message to our elected officials and to the country that it's time for a coal moratorium!
